Energy return on investment or EROI is a ratio for describing the amount of energy produced relative to the energy used to create it. EROI is equal to the energy output divided by the energy input. The energy return on investment is a key factor in the price of energy. Sources of energy with cheap inputs will allow the energy price to remain low. EROI is important because if the cost of an energy plant is more than the revenues generated from selling electricity from that plant, that plant is not economically viable. A higher EROI means that producing energy from that energy source is relatively easy and cheap. A smaller ERI means producing energy from that energy source is relatively difficult and expensive.

Mark Greaney’s The Gray Man features Courtland Gentry, a former CIA operative who’s now hired to kill. The story follows Gentry across Europe as he attempts to rescue his handler, Sir Donald Fitzroy and his family held hostage in Normandy, France from Lloyd Hansen, an American attorney and ex-CIA operative now working for LaurentGroup, a multinational French corporation. Lloyd wants Gentry terminated to help finalize a billion-dollar oil deal in Nigeria with the Nigerian president who wants Gentry dead because he killed the president’s brother.
