Friday Five No. 208 Dec 15, 2023

Hi All!

Below is your weekly dose of a list of things I’m reading, watching, listening to, or thinking about from my No. 208 Dec 15, 2023 newsletter. If this message was forwarded to you, sign up for this newsletter using this link.

New Instagram Account I’m Following

My wife Ashlee sent me the Deadendwest Instagram account the other day and I’m hooked. It reminds me of the Cambridge Wines and New York Times Cooking accounts that I can’t get enough of. Deadendwest is a bartender making incredible cocktails. The simplicity in his videos is what I appreciate the most. Mad props to this guy’s cocktail-making skills.

Article I Read

Tim Urban who writes the Wait But Why blog is one of my favorite humans. Sometimes a podcast, book, or article hits you at the perfect time. That was the case when I read Taming the Mammoth: Why You Should Stop Caring What Other People Think this week. The post was written in 2014, holds up extremely well, and was just what I needed for a pick-me-up.

New Podcast I Listened To

Sam Zemurray (The Fish That Ate The Whale) is the story from one of my favorite books I read in 2016 by the same name (The Fish That Ate the Whale: The Life and Times of America’s Banana King). This book holds a special place in my heart now that I live in New Orleans. It’s the story of a Russian immigrant who builds an incredible US banana business in New Orleans through hard work and determination. The stories in the book are unreal.

Blog Post I Wrote

Ashlee and I recently visited New York City. As always, NYC delivered. A Practical New York City Travel Guide: Conquering The Concrete Jungle is my guide to the city. I’ve got you covered on what to see, what to do, where to eat, and where to drink. Cheers!

Quote I’m Re-Reading

So many people think that having kids is the end of their creativity or a drag on their career. On the contrary, it can free you up to do much, much better work. It narrows things real quick. It makes you far less sensitive to things that don’t matter. – @RyanHoliday
