For a bank that’s been on the sidelines during the pandemic, the Citi ThankYou program sure does know how to create buzz lately. This time by adding American Airlines AAdvantage as a transfer partner. Before this program update, Citi introduced its Citi Custom Cash Card and closed new applications on its Citi Prestige Card. With the addition of American Airlines, Citi now has 17 airline partners.

One could argue American Airlines AAdvantage is now one of the Citi ThankYou program’s top airline partners. The reason is that American Airlines AAdvantage only partners with Marriott Bonvoy and Bilt Rewards. Said another way, flying American Airlines or its partner airlines flights, American Airlines’ credit cards, Marriott credit cards, or the Bilt Credit Card were the primary ways to earn American Airlines miles. Now, you transfer Citi ThankYou points directly to American Airlines to book award flights.

Citi ThankYou Offer

From July 18th to November 13, 2021, you can transfer Citi ThankYou points to American Airlines. Citi ThankYou points transfer to American Airlines AAdvantage at a 1:1 ratio if you have the discontinued Citi Prestige Card or Citi Premier Card. Citi Rewards+ Card or Citi ThankYou Preferred cardmembers can transfer points to American Airlines AAdvantage at a 2:1 ratio.

American Airlines is a Oneworld Alliance member. This means American Airlines AAdvantage miles can be used to book award flights with its alliance members. In addition, American Airlines AAdvantage miles can be redeemed to book flights with airline partners outside the alliance like Etihad Airways.

Best Citi Credit Cards

With the Citi Prestige Card no longer available, the Citi Premier Card is clearly the best Citi credit card. Cardmembers earn 3x points at restaurants, supermarkets, gas stations, air travel, and hotels. Other Citi cards to keep on your radar include the Citi Double Cash Card, Citi Rewards+ Card, and Citi Custom Cash Card.

You earn 2% cashback on all transactions with the Citi Double Cash Card. The Citi Rewards+ Card earns 2x points at supermarkets and gas stations. In addition, the card rounds up to the nearest 10 points on every purchase. Citi Custom Cash cardmembers earn 5% cash back in your top spend category each billing cycle up to $500 spent. 5% cashback categories include restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, select travel, select transit, select streaming services, drugstores, home improvement stores, fitness clubs, and live entertainment.
