St Thomas Travel Guide: 48 Hours Vacationing in St Thomas

What to Pack for St Thomas in the Winter, tips featured by top US travel blog, Points with Q: image of Virgin Islands

Two things St Thomas travel is known for are its pristine beaches and top-notch snorkeling. The island of one of three US Virgin Islands joining St Croix and St John. What’s great about these islands is that you can experience the Caribbean even during restricted travel. As of today, a negative COVID-19 test is required within 120 hours before departure and you’re good to go.

So, when you do make it to the island, let’s map out everything to do on your St Thomas travel. Beaches, historical sites, bar hopping, wreck diving, and Caribbean music are just a few experiences you can have when vacationing in St Thomas.

American Express, Chase, and Citi are credit card programs that each program offers personal and business credit cards that have high earn rates in relevant spending categories. Some of the more interesting cards include the Amex Gold Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve, and Citi Premier Card.

You earn 4x points at restaurants and US grocery stores with the Amex Gold Card. The Chase Sapphire Reserve earns 3x points at restaurants and on travel. 3x points on restaurants, supermarkets, gas stations, air travel, and hotels are what you earn with the Citi Premier Card.

How to Fly to St Thomas USVI

Cyril E. King Airport (STT) is the main airport for St Thomas travel. This airport offers nonstop flights across the Caribbean as well as to a number of US destinations. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, and Spirit Airlines offer nonstop from the US. United Airlines also offers seasonal service.

American flies nonstop from Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami; Delta flies nonstop from Atlanta, New York–JFK; JetBlue flies nonstop from Newark, New York–JFK; Spirit flies nonstop from Fort Lauderdale, Orlando.

After landing on the island, snag a cab as Lyft/Uber does not operate on the island. Cabs only accept cash so have some on hand if you need to get around.

Where to Stay in St Thomas USVI

St Thomas isn’t well represented with hotels from major hotel brands across the island. Marriott is the only major brand with a presence, so those with Marriott points are in luck. Marriott has new properties is looking to add in 2022 that are not included in the list below.

The Marriott Frenchman’s Cove and Ritz-Carlton St Thomas are your two Marriott options. AirBnb and Google Hotels are additional platforms you should check out. Google Hotel Search is a platform I like to use. If you use this platform, check out this God Save the Points piece on everything you need to know.

Best Things to Do in St Thomas USVI

Day 1

With coffee in hand, check out Honeymoon Beach or Magens Bay Beach. In Magens Bay, bring your snorkeling gear as the calm waters make it easy to snorkel. For non-beach activities, Drake’s Seat, SkyRide to Paradise Point, and Water Island are on my list.

For lunch, grab your fix of Caribbean street food followed by an afternoon of rum bar hopping. There’s always good steelpan music in the Caribbean so end your day by enjoying live Caribbean music.

Day 2

If you’re into diving, St Thomas has no shortage of companies to take you wreck diving. This would be a great way to start your second day of St Thomas travel. In addition to diving, a lobster hunting excursion is another option you have to start your second 24 hours on the island.

Diving and lobster hunting isn’t for everyone, I get it. So instead, make a day trip to St John. You can actually see the island from St Thomas so it’s a fairly quick ride to get over there. Once you’re on the island, there are additional beaches and tropical forests to explore. And there you have it. Two days of St Thomas travel in the books.
