My 2023 reading year closed out with one philosophy book – Courage Is Calling: Fortune Favors the Brave and one semi-energy book The 38 Letters from J.D. Rockefeller to His Son: Perspectives, Ideology, and Wisdom. Ryan Holiday, author of Courage is Calling, is one of my favorite authors. It would be easy to say Courage is Calling was my favorite of these two books. However, I am going to give the nod to my favorite book in this December reading list The 38 Letters from J.D. Rockefeller to His Son: Perspectives, Ideology, and Wisdom.

One of the many aspects I love about The 38 Letters from J.D. Rockefeller to His Son: Perspectives, Ideology, and Wisdom is the book’s simplicity. It is John D. Rockefeller, arguably the most powerful person in the world at the time, talking to his son while his son is away. The human element in the book is powerful. Not to be outdone, Courage Is Calling: Fortune Favors the Brave is another Holiday book that hits the mark for me. With that preamble, let’s get into the December reading list.

Courage Is Calling: Fortune Favors the Brave

Courage Is Calling: Fortune Favors the Brave by Ryan Holiday is another book I recently added to my list of philosophy books I love. This book explores courage through stories about historical figures like Marcus Aurelius, Charles De Gaulle, Florence Nightingale, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Frederick Douglass. What’s interesting about these stories is that by studying history you realize how much the past resembles the present.

The 38 Letters from J.D. Rockefeller to His Son: Perspectives, Ideology, and Wisdom

The 38 Letters from J.D. Rockefeller to His Son: Perspectives, Ideology, and Wisdom by G. Ng is a compilation of letters from the famous John D. Rockefeller to his son. What’s fascinating about these letters is that the letters were never meant for public consumption. It’s eerily similar to Meditations: A New Translation where Marcus Aurelius never intended for his journal to become public. I loved The 38 Letters from J.D. Rockefeller to his son and highly recommend picking up this book.
