3 Best Ways To Book Finnair Business Class

Compared to the Star Alliance, the number of Oneworld airline partners with nonstop flights between the US and Europe is much smaller. Finnair business class is one example of a nonstop Oneworld flight that you can book. American Airlines is another Oneworld example. Of the Oneworld partners, you could argue Finnair doesn’t receive much media coverage compared to its peers. That actually may work in your favor as that may mean less competition for award seats.

Being in the Oneworld alliance means you can book Finnair business class using its miles or its Oneworld Alliance partner miles. Generally speaking, Alaska Mileage Plan, American AAdvantage, and British Airways Executive Club are some of the top Oneowlrd Alliance loyalty programs to redeem miles in.

Credit Cards Points to Earn to Book Finnair Business Class

Alaska Mileage Plan, American AAdvantage, British Airways Executive Club, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, Finnair Plus, Iberia Plus, Japan Airlines Mileage Bank, and Qantas Frequent Flyer can be redeemed to book Finnair business class. However, Alaska Mileage Plan, American AAdvantage, and Cathay Pacific Asia Miles are likely the easiest programs to use.

Some of my favorite cards that earn Alaska miles, American miles, and Cathay miles include the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant, Bilt Credit Card, and the Amex Gold Card. You earn 6x points at Marriott with the Marriott Bnovoy Brilliant. The Bilt Credit Card earns 2x points on travel booked with airlines, hotels, car rentals, or cruises, and earns 3x points on dining. With the Amex Gold Card, you earn 4x points on dining and at US supermarkets.

Finnair Business Class Routes

Finnair operates nonstop flights between the US and Helsinki (HEL) and Stockholm (ARN). Helsinki (HEL) offers nonstop Finnair flights to Chicago–O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, and New York–JFK with seasonal flights to Miami, and San Francisco. There are also seasonal Finnair nonstop flights between Stockholm (ARN) and Los Angeles, Miami, and New York–JFK. The Finnair business class A350 is scheduled to fly the Finnair routes between the US and Europe. The Finnair business class 777 and Finnair business class 777-300ER are no longer listed as part of the airline’s fleet. So, one would assume these aircraft are no longer in service.

How to Book Finnair Business Class with Points

*No surcharges

American Airlines requires the least number of miles at 57,500 to book Finnair business class. The bonus with using American miles is that you do not pay fuel surcharges.

The next best option is to redeem 70,000 Alaska miles with no fuel surcharges. Alaska does require additional miles compared to American. However, Alaska allows you to include a stopover on a one-way award flight.

While not my favorite program, 61,000 Cathay Pacific miles is the third-best option because there are fuel surcharges. Cathay partners with Amex, Brex, Citi, Capital One, and Marriott making it relatively easy to earn Asia Miles. Cathay uses distance-based charts so it’s helpful to use Great Circle Mapper to determine the distance of your flight.

Whichever option you choose, note that the lowest average Finnair business class price runs around $2,600 round-trip.

How To Book

American has an easy-to-use booking website so I prefer American over other websites. Here’s how to search for and book your Finnair business class award flight:

  • Go to American Airlines website
  • Select “Advanced / Multi-city search”
  • Tick “Redeem miles”
  • Click “One way”
  • Enter From & To cities
  • Select departure date(s)
  • Choose the number of passengers
  • Select “Business/First” as the Class
  • Click Search
  • Select “Calendar”
  • Sort by “Nonstop”

If you’re booking with American miles, you can complete your booking on American’s website. If you’re booking with Alaska or Cathay Pacific miles, you need to confirm the award space found on the American website on Alaska’s website. Connections booked using Cathay Pacific miles may require you to call 866-892-2598 to book the flight.

Conclusion on Finnair Business Class

Finnair is a unique way to fly transatlantic to access the Nordic region of Europe. For those of you with Alaska, American, or Cathay Pacific miles, redeeming these miles to book Finnair may offer excellent value. The main downside with Finnair is the airline’s relatively limited route network between the US and Europe.
